The end came
early Monday Morning at his home in Winston-Salem after an illness of several
Months - Had been in the Railroad Service for over 30 years - Was a public
spirited citizen.

Capt. Charles
Buford was born in Brunswick County, Virginia August 8, 1849 and died at his
home in this city last night a few minutes past 12 o'clock, Captain Buford
had been in declining health for some months, and therefore his death while it
came as a shock was not unexpected. Captain Buford entered the service of
the Old Richmond and Danville Railroad Company in 1873. He came to Winston
as agent February 7, 1877, and has served continuously in that capacity ever
since. He had been prominently connected with the official, as well as the
business life of the city having served several terms as mayor and also as a
member of the board of aldermen. Captain Buford is the first to die of ten
children, five sons and five daughters, the oldest being 70 years of age.
He was twice married, first to Miss Ellen S. Zevely(I think this should be
Zeverly) December 12, 1878, and to Miss L. Duffy on October 29, 1903, and is
survived by his wife and two children; Miss Nellie and an infant son and the
following brothers and sisters. Judge F. E. Buford, of Brunswick county,

Elizabeth B. Phillips of Bloomfield, N.J Misses Margaret and Fannie Buford
of Brunswick County, VA and Miss Jennie Buford, of Winston-Salem. Capt.
Buford was popular with a large circle of friends who deeply mourn his loss.
Charles was the son of William
Pegram and Lucy A. Rice Buford of Brunswick County, Virginia.
Charles was the Grandson of Abram and Susan P. Buford of Nottoway Parish, Amelia
County, Virginia
